  • Mumbai Indians register first win of IPL 2015
  • 18-run win secured over RCB thanks to half-centuries from Sharma and Chand
  • Defeat sees the Royal Challengers replace Mumbai in last place

20th over: RCB 191-7 (Wiese 47, Nechim 1)

Rohit Sharma drops Wiese in the deep but throws to run out Abdulla. And once Wiese misses a nicely disguised slower ball from Pollard – who’s bowling his first over – that’s the game. Last ball goes for four. Meh.

A drop in the deep, as Wiese tries to clear midwicket, but the ball is thrown in from the guilty Sharma and Abdulla is well short of his ground.

27 needed from 5...

19th over: RCB 182-6 (Wiese 39, Abdulla 20)

Malinga with his final over and he starts with a wide! Abdulla gets his bat down on an off-stump yorker and takes a single into the off side. Great yorker and Wiese can only hit it into the ground and back to the bowler. A hack into the leg side nearly leads to a run-out as the batsmen search for two. Their are bodies strewn on the floor, but one of them is Malinga, who can gather the ball. Abdullagets a thick edge and finds four at third man. No singe off the last ball means Wiese is on strike for the last over.

18th over: RCB 175-6 (Wiese 38, Abdulla 14)

Wiese starts with a four through third man. Another four two balls later, as McClenaghan moves around the wicket and it’s carted through the covers. And then next ball a slash through point! A fourth four prevented by the sweeper on the leg-side, running around to deep square leg. Abdulla with basically a free hit and he’s bounced but too high – wide! Poor call, in my opinion.

17th over: RCB 160-6 (Wiese 20, Abdulla 13)

Bumrah bowls the first ball of his final over before the timeout finishes, which doesn’t break any rules and merely highlights how nonsensical it is. Anyhow, Abdulla gets off strike and and Wiese carts the next ball over square leg for six! Single down the ground offers. But Abdulla comes to the party with consecutive fours off the last two balls!

16th over: RCB 144-6 (WIESE 18, ABDULLA 5)

All a bit futile now. Required rate passes 16 and Wiese hits one down the ground, as Pandya makes a return. A full toss is helped down the ground for SIX by David Wiese. The last ball goes for four, as Wiese helps it around the corner.

15th over: RCB 129-6 (Wiese 6, Abdulla 4)

Clamped dab into the off-side, behind square, gets AB de Villiers on strike. Bumrah’s the bowler. But AB goes! Opens up to go over mid-wicket but it’s straight to Pollard, who just doesn’t drop them. Abdulla goes over the top of the covers at the end of the over, for four!

AB goes, caught at midwicket by Pollard.

14th over: RCB 124-5 (de Villiers 41, Wiese 5)

Rossouw goes first ball, trying to work the ball into the leg side for a single. Wiese off the mark with a four around the corner, as Harbhajan tries to cramp him for room. Single off the last ball means Wiese is still on strike.

Bowled trying to give the strike back to AB. Awful shot, anyway. And that’s Harbhajan’s 100th IPL wicket...

13th over: RCB 119-4 (de Villiers 41, Rossouw 0)

Malinga starts with a wide down the leg-side and they run a bye but gets Karthik next ball, as the ball is chipped just within mid-off’s reach. Unfortunately for Mumbai, that’s AB on strike now and Malinga is pumped down the ground for six! The next is clubbed onto the roof! A fine yorker is jammed to fine leg and they manage to get two from it. AB then plays a reverse sweep to fine-leg for a one-bounce four. And then a four through cover!

Karthik gets under a yorker from Malinga and chips it over his head, but straight into the hands of Chand, who takes a good catch diving forwards.

12nd over: RCB 95-3 (Karthik 18, de Villiers 19)

Karthik does the smart thing and get de Villiers on strike straightaway. Dances down the wicket and smokes the ball down the ground for four! Karthik then lofts over cover for two, upon getting the strike. Good dab sweep lifts over third-man head and it’s four to Karthik. Wide down the offside. And then a big six over square leg! 19 from the over...

11st over: RCB 76-3 (Karthik 5, de Villiers 14)

McClenaghan back into the attack (his first two overs went for 13). Gets Kohli on strike after the first ball and looks like he’s persisting in getting the ball across him. AMcClenaghan back into the attack (his first two overs went for 13). Gets Kohli on strike after the first ball and looks like he’s persisting in getting the ball across him. And it works, getting to cut straight to Rayudu on the off side boundary. Finally, AB de Villiers has come to the crease and he gets off the mark with a four! Guided to third man. Next ball is moosed down the ground for six! Then a ramp for FOUR!

McClenaghan persists with balls across Kohli and reaps the reward of his wicket as the ball is flayed right to the man on the deep-cover-point boundary.

10th over: RCB 60-2 (Kohli 18, Karthik 4)

Hardik Pandya and his right-arm mediums into the attack and immediately beats Kohli’s advancing bat. Karthik then fires a drive to a man on the boundary and the two batsmen collide in the middle of the pitch, turning for a second. But somehow, they’re both safe as Pandya fails to take the throw to the stumps at the non-striker’s end. Apologies are offered.

9th over: RCB 56-2 (Kohli 17, Karthik 1)

So Gayle’s painful innings is finally at an end. But no AB de Villiers – it’s Dinesh Karthik. Kohli’s had enough and plants a six over mid-wicket. Then a nicely caressed shot into the covers for one.

A garbage knock comes to a fitting end – Gayle, to his 24th ball, dances down the pitch and completely misses an arm ball. Off stump hit.

8th over: RCB 48-1 (Gayle 10, Kohli 10)

Another wide ball, this time down the off-side, from Bumrah to Gayle. Kohli gets the strike and flicks the ball to midwicket for four! And Gayle gets another reprieve! Works the ball around the corner and it’s dropped by Malinga, who is diving to his right. Simple catch, not taken.

7th over: RCB 37-1 (Gayle 8, Kohli 2)

Harbhajan bowling around the wicket to Kohli, after Gayle gets a single, and he’s tight into his hip. Kohli manages to work a single to square leg before Gayle gets the chance to swing his arms, but his sweep around the corner finds the field, so it’s only one. Drop and run again by Kohli.

6th over: RCB 33-1 (Gayle 6, Kohli 0)

Jasprit Bumrah into the crease and he’s down the leg side to Gayle. Wide. And again. And again. And again. Finally, a legal ball, but farcical effort from Malinga sees two come from it instead of one. Gayle back on strike and he beats the bat with an off-cutter. Kohli gets on strike to face his first ball and it decks away from him, off the wicket, and a limp flick is offered. Over done, finally...

5th over: RCB 26-1 (Gayle 3)

Harbhajan into the attack and Bisla immediately sweeps him over square-leg for four! A couple of dots and a change in the field leave Bisla a straight option which he duly takes, for six!

Bisla goes to give himself room but Harbhajan spots him and fires one in flatter and hits the top of middle stump.

4th over: RCB 16-0 (Gayle 3, Bisla 10)

Just singles and nothing much of note from the batsmen. Gayle looks stuck in a rut and it’s letting things drift. Good from Malinga, it has to be said.

3rd over: RCB 12-0 (Gayle 1, Bisla 8)

Bisla gives himself room to McClenaghan and times him well through the off-side for four. the right-hander did well to give himself room (it was only his second ball). Tries the same again and misses. Then a nice flick through mid-wicket for four.

2nd over: RCB 4-0 (Gayle 1, Bisla 0)

Good start from Malinga, who beats Gayle all ends up with a combination of cutters and full balls. And it’s a maiden.

1st over: RCB 4-0 (Gayle 1, Bisla 0)

McClenaghan starts with the ball and second ball, Gayle fires straight to Simmons at cover and it’s in and out! A couple of short-balls, one wided and the other no-balled, has McClenaghan annoyed. Tight call, that second one. Another wide, this one on width, down the off side. Finally, a single off the bat gets Gayle off the mark.

Those in the Sky Studio reckon this could be close, and I’m inclined to agree with them.

Gayle, Kohli, de Villiers – those three could chase anything. Malinga’s been ropey and McClenaghan can go for a few. The RCB openers are out – it’s Gayle and Bisla to get things going...

20th over: Mumbai Indians 209-7 (Pandya 16)

New man Pandya hits his first ball for six. He’s dropped two balls later, when Kohli, close the rope, lets one through his grasp before smashing a full-toss from Nechim over mid-wicket. A run-out on the last ball keeps the Mumbai to 209.

19th over: Mumbai Indians 193-6 (Singh 0, Pandya 1)

A shimmy then flick brings Pollard a four, as Wiese tries to angle into his front pad. But he goes next ball and Rayudu follows him the ball after, both finding Chahal at midwicket. The hat-trick ball is then charged and smeared through cover for four! And then Rohit does his best Tim Henmann impression, serving a volley back to Wiese, who takes a good reflex catch.

A slower ball from Wiese has Sharma going for an over-hand dab back to the bowler, who takes a smart one-handed catch. Absurd bit of cricket.

Same again. Selfless if a bit timid from Rayudu, who scoops to Chahal when he could have hit that with real intent.

Pollard swipes hard to mid-wicket, where Chahal takes a flat chance just about his head.

18th over: Mumbai Indians 184-3 (Sharma 38, Pollard 1)

Chand starts with a nice back-foot cut for four, before he holes out to Kohli at mid off. Not all bad, though, as Kieron Pollard strolls to the crease. Single off his first ball gives him strike for the next over...

A fine knock comes to an end as Chand gets on one knee and tries to clear the rope at mid off but can only find Kohli.

17th over: Mumbai Indians 176-2 (Chand 53, Sharma 36)

Back from the time-out and a full-toss is savaged over mid-wicket for six!Four more, though cover, past the diving (falling) Chris Gayle. Nechim’s the bowler, and he’s coming around the wicket. Another brutal maximum, as Sharma plays the sweep of the decade for six over square leg, to a right arm pacer bowling around the wicket. Then he thumps over square leg, in more orthodox fashion, for another!

16th over: Mumbai Indians 152-2 (Chand 53, Sharma 16)

The impressive Wiese is back with the ball and it’s four, as Chand shows good touch to flick an edge past the keeper (deliberately, of course). Then he beats AB de Villiers with a four over the diving AB de Villiers. And a third four, as Wiese bowls a slow off cutter that moves into Chand, who tickles the ball past the keeper, on the leg side, for four. Hard thump down the ground gives Sharma the strike. Chand back on strike and Wiese goes short but it’s too high and wide-d! A very nice yorker is sent down and Chand clamps down, opens the face and it’s another four! Big big over.

15th over: Mumbai Indians 133-2 (Chand 35, Sharma 12)

Leg-bye and Aaron is bowling to Sharma. A direct hit from AB de Villiers gets Sharma jumping back into the crease, but he manages to get off the mark with two from that deflection. Good timing from Sharma sees him swivel pull Aaron behind square on the leg side, for four! Sharma then holds the pose and crashes into a full-ball that goes for six, just over the cover boundary!

14th over: Mumbai Indians 120-2 (Chand 35, Rohit 0)

After a fine four through point, Simmins skies and is caught by Aaron, taking a high catch at fine leg. Rohit Sharma into the fray.

A fine innings comes to an end as Simmons top edges and Aaron keeps his cool to take a good catch.

13th over: Mumbai Indians 114-1 (Simmons 55, Chand 34)

Simmons misses out on a few actually –a wider ball is mistimed for two, as is a full toss, which he can only plink down the ground for 1. Sharp work from the keeper sees a leg-side stumping sent up to the TV umpire, but Chand’s back-foot remained grounded throughout. Shoddy wide down the off side this time and then a six to finish the over, as Chand goes over midwicket.

12th over: Mumbai Indians 101-1 (Simmons 51, Chand 28)

Just four from that Chahal over, as Simmons gets a single to go to his half century off 36 balls.

11th over: Mumbai Indians 97-1 (Simmons 49, Chand 26)

Very sharp start to Aaron’s third over has Simmons on his toes, dabbing the ball to the keeper, via a few bounces. Then a MONSTROUS SIX comes cannoning off Simmons’ bat and then off the top of the stadium. Then a furious back cut for four! Then a sumptuous ping off his legs for yet another four!

10th over: Mumbai Indians 83-1 (Simmons 35, Chand 26)

The rather brilliantly named Yuzvendra Chahal bowling leggies and Chand immediately cuts to point for four! Better for the next two, which are dots into the off side, before Chand picks up the short ball early and smokes it for SIX over midwicket!

9th over: Mumbai Indians 73-1 (Simmons 35, Chand 16)

Singles and then a firm sweep (for one) before Simmons skips down the ground and his six over mid-on. The first of the match.

8th over: Mumbai Indians 64-1 (Simmons 28, Chand 14)/

Wiese continuing after an impressive first over and he’s getting respect from Simmons and Chand, who just deal in singles and twos.

7th over: Mumbai Indians 59-1 (Simmons 27, Chand 12)

Left arm spin of Abdulla back into the attack and Chand works him to point for a couple, after two early sighters. Nice, flat four from Chand, as he sweeps to deep mid-wicket. A threaded four, which doesn’t look anywhere near as well-timed, finds the rope at cover. Busy stuff from Chand, who takes a single off the last ball.

6th over: Mumbai Indians 48-1 (Simmons 27, Chand 1)

South African David Wiese is into the attack and he starts with a yorker, dug out well by Patel. A leg-bye brings Simmons on strike and he’s squared up a touch by Wiese, before he takes a single to third man with a nice angled drive. Patel chops on and then there’s a run-out chance with Chand, but he’s in, having lept to avoid the ball, with the bails dislodged already.

Well bowled by Wiese, who changes the pace and has Patel chopping on.

5th over: Mumbai Indians 45-0 (Simmons 26, Patel 11)

Better from Nechim, who’s not giving any width to Patel or Simmons. And here we go, Simmons eventually swipes across the line and it eeks through midwicket for four! The next is a lot more aesthetic and classical - burned through point.

4th over: Mumbai Indians 36-0 (Simmons 18, Patel 11)

Aaron wide again, as the ball hoops from his hand. He’s more at Simmons next ball, but shorter and wider for the next ball and Simmons plays a sharp square-cut for four! The next ball is short and looks to have hurried Simmons, but he pulls for four fairly easily, actually. Timed well off his pads for the last ball, which scuttles under the man up at third man.

3rd over: Mumbai Indians 23-0 (Simmons 6, Patel 11)

Right-armer Abu Nechim into the attack and he’s thumped for two fours through mid-wicket – one a well-timed push, the other a healthy pull. There’s an LBW appeal fourth ball, but there’s nothing in it according to the umpire, but it did look in front of leg. Then again, Patel might have also hit the thing.

2nd over: Mumbai Indians 13-0 (Simmons 5, Patel 2)

Uncontrollable swing for Aaron, who wides the first two balls, the second of which is five bits. Still, decent pace and, against the right-hander Simmons, he’s much more threatening, shaping the ball away from him. Finishes short and Simmons rocks back and pulls him in front of square for four!

1st over: Mumbai Indians 2-0 (Simmons 1, Patel 1)

Iqbal Abdulla to Simmons first up and a couple of singles are exchanged between him and Parthiv Patel, and that’s that.

The players are raring to go and a slow leftie is kicking things off for RCB...

TEAM NEWS

RCB: V Kohli*, CH Gayle, MS Bisla, KD Karthik†, AB de Villiers, RR Rossouw, D Wiese, Iqbal Abdulla, AN Ahmed, VR Aaron, YS Chahal

RIGHT - let’s get cracking with this second game.

The disappointing news it ath Corey Anderson is missing. Not literally – he’s just not in the Mumbai side, despite this ground being a big-hitting Mecca.

Vithushan will be here soon. In the meantime, here’s what happened last time Mumbai played:

An opening blitz from Brendon McCullum (62) and Dwayne Smith (46) made light work of the Mumbai Indians’ total of 183, dealing out a fourth consecutive defeat for the hosts, as the Chennai Super Kings kept up their 100% record in this year’s Indian Premier League with a six-wicket win.

McCullum and Smith scored 90 in the power play – the second highest opening six overs in IPL history – with Mumbai’s left-arm spinner Jagadeesha Suchitch’s two overs in that period going for 33. When both openers eventually departed, to Harbhajan Singh, only 69 more runs were needed, with eight wickets and 72 balls remaining. In the end Raina’s unbeaten 43, from 29 balls with four fours and two sixes, saw Chennai home with 20 balls to spare.
